' All is well that ends well ' so says the poet . But the year of 2001 did not end well for a certain group of people on this earth . Even the year began unwell . It dawned with a devastating earth - quake in Gujarat in the very first month . The quake caught the nation unawares . It spelt doom for many families of Bhuj on 26 January . The calamity was grave and proved to be a herculean , job for the country . It claimed many lives high and low . The nation cancelled the Republic Day Ceremony and grieved over the quake - tragedy . A few months later , some terrorists stormed bullets all on a sudden on the Amarnath pilgrims who camped en - route at Sheshnag . People all over the country shed tears and were speechless with surprise at the massacre . Then there came suddenly the severe blow that hit the USA hard . Men on earth will never forget the Black September . A few militants skyjacked the American aircrafts and purposely crashed them into the Twin Towers of World Trade Centre on September 11. To the astonishment of the world , the centre completely disappeared from the earth . As a result , a world - wide drive against terrorism sprang forth . And Afganisthan faced terrible war . The year came to a close with the spread of violence . Our Parliament was attacked by five terrorists on 13 December . They came to blow it off . One of them was a human bomb . All the five of them were killed in a fierce battle with our Security Guards . Apart from the dark sides , the year just gone by had also bright sides of its own . Here are some of the top achievements of the year . Scientists have discovered two new planetory systems . We have sound waves for incision - free surgery . A new pollution - free way is found for making paper . The year's biggest attainment is the entire mapping of human genome .
A way to completely cure diabetes has also been detected . With war and devastation ; earth - quake and terrorism , the year just gone by has left the impression that a good many of us will never forget its memory . It will never fade away .
