Prafullachandra Roy as a scientist was great , but as a teacher he was greater . He was born on the 2nd August in 1861 in Khulna now in Bangladesh . He was admitted as a student to Hare School at Kolkata . On completion of his studies in Kolkata he sailed for England for higher studies . He passed there the B. Sc . examination and completed his D. Sc . Back home , he joined the Presidency College as a teacher in Chemistry . He was a great scholar in the subject . The Nitrate of Mercury which he invented made him renowned .
With all his heart he loved his motherland . He himself was a great patriot and inspired his students in many ways to feel for their country . With this view in mind he taught a large number of students . He desired that his students would rise by themselves . He founded the famous institution Bengal Chemical in this state . Some of his boys became in their later life great and successful scientists . He lived a most simple life . Never he used even a comb to dress his hair . He was highly sympathetic and loving towards his students and always tried to help them in need . This noble son of India passed away on the 16th July , 1944. Thus ended the life of a man who taught his people to practise self - help .
