Most books, no matter how dark they start, have a promise of a happy ending.

Flawed is sad through and through.

The book centers around the theme of how facing domestic abuse from a very young age can hurt children living in such an environment. Sarah, and James – they are both broken people, James doubly so. In a codependent relationship, with violent – or apathetic – caregivers, the siblings’ lives are bound tight together.

Until Sarah tries to break free.

I won’t claim nothing about this book was wrong; the writing was okay, the characters okay – Sarah comes off as spineless a few places and frankly Sam is more of a side character than the male lead; the plot meandered a bit, and was hot and cold – fast-paced at places and slow at others; and the ending was shocking, but disappointing (although I can’t think of any other way it could have ended, so there is that). So what did I read it for?

For David. His character was absolutely brilliant – flawed, broken, stuck permanently in the caretaker mode, and unable to divorce that emotion from his utter love for his sister, until it morphs into something that shouldn’t be. He knows there is something wrong about him, but he is helpless to stop himself… the conflict within himself is heartbreaking. You end up sympathizing more with him than anyone else.

This is a good book – entirely different from the norm, and like I say, different is always good. Flawed is worth giving a try.
