Without Merit
Wrongly classified as romance, Without Merit reads more like a psychological drama. The heroine is unlikable, and an unreliable narrator - judgmental, oblivious, and yet with a compelling world view.
Very complex world-building, layers upon layers. There are far too many lies, and needless complexity – as a reader, all you can think about is that things would go so much better if the Voss family were able to have one decent conversation together without storming off on each other. Impressively written, Merit managed to drag me into her mind even while I thought that what she thought was wrong. There’s a lot of symbolism in here. Sagan’s a twisted individual – his drawings are proof.
The characters are incredibly built. This book could be slammed as narrow-minded and bigoted and insensitive, but the point is that Without Merit is filtered through the mind of a self-absorbed, flawed, depressed heroine and thus all her perceptions are reflected in the writing.
A disturbing book, but an oddly coercive read.
