HOW TO WRITE A RESUME
Whether you are looking for your first job or trying to make a career change, the process starts with your resume. This one document can make or break your chances of getting a job interview. Here are some essential steps to writing a resume :
📌 Review professional resume examples.
📌 Choose a resume format : they are either - chronological resume format, which is ideal for people with plenty of work experience; or Functional/skills-based resume format, which is good if you lack relevant work experience because you are a student/recent graduate; or a combination of the two. Check out example resumes from the Internet in the layout you choose, before you get to writing your own.
📌 Write your professional title and resume summary : A resume summary is a brief description at the top of your resume that describes your previous experience and what you have done in the past that could benefit your desired employer. It’s important to briefly expand and elaborate on items in your resume that you want the hiring manager to read first.
Resume summary statements can set you apart as a job seeker among a sea of other similar candidates. Using a resume professional summary demonstrates your qualifications for the job which you are applying quickly and efficiently.
📌 Include your contact information
📌 Match your skills to the ones in the job ad : Always tailor the resume to fit the job. Check out the company website, if you need, and look for the qualities they are looking for in new hires, and try incorporate those points and keywords in your resume.
📌 Use resume keywords and action verbs : There are certain resume keywords which, if used correctly, will highly increase your chances of being called for that interview, while other keywords will send your application directly to the “No” pile. The two main types of keywords that recruiters or employers look for in your resume - Job Keywords, that explain what are your primary characteristics (hard skills and soft skills) and qualification for the job; and Action Verbs, that show that you can accomplish and succeed in your position.
I’ll include a list of resume keywords down below.
📌 Focus on your achievements : It is important that the information in your resume to be divided as closely as possible to the middle. Half of your information should consist of jobs, education, dates, contact details, and the other half should list your achievements, promotions and personal development. A professional resume exists to tell the recruiter what you have achieved until now, so your personal achievements are significant. Also be prepared to explain to the interviewer how an award was decided and how you achieved your results.
📌 Select the right font and color theme : The resume layout must never be cluttered; and always organized. Some resume must-haves are - One page in length (max three); clear section headings; ample white-space, especially around the margins, and easy-to-read font.
📌 Proofread before sending : The greatest mistake you can ever make in a resume is to have typos and errors in the resume. It is the height of un-professionalism. Always, always, check to see if the resume contains spelling mistakes or typos.
