Last summer I happened to experience a horrible fire which broke out at my friend's house . The flame was first noticed on midnight in the room of their maid - servant . The maid , aged 45 , said later that she was disturbed in her sleep by scorching heat . Waking up , she was surprised to see her room ablaze . She came out and shouted an alarm . A short circuit in the old line was found later to be the cause . Like all other houses in the village , these were built of mud - walls with bamboo frames and straw overhead .
Besides , the summer wind was blowing as usual and helped the fire spread rapidly . It started catching adjoining houses and destroying them within minutes . Prompt action was taken to carry the children and the old out to a safe place . Then busy hands joined in to fetch potfuls of water and pour down on the flames . But all our attempts were foiled . Our struggle continued for three hours . The valuables could not be saved . The loss was great . Two persons seriously injured and carried to the nearby Health centre . This was my first memory about a fire . It stays too vividly with me as if it had occurred yesterday .
